Business Name:Lucy MacNicoll Floral Design
Job Title:Owner and Head of Creative & Floral Design
Tell us a little bit about your business:We are a Wedding & Events Floral Design studio based in Harrogate. We work all over the North of England. Our floral designs are romantic with a natural garden style. We combine dreamy colour palettes with an abundance of beautiful flowers, textured foliage, grasses and vines.
How did you come up with your business plan?I have worked in Floral Design for 12 years and set up the business 10 years ago.
Once you had the idea how did you turn it into reality?I have a creative background and always wanted to run my own business. After getting married and planning my own florals I knew I was ready to change my career path and begin the process of setting up my business. I began my training working in my local florist and doing as many floral design courses I could. After two years I felt ready to take the leap and officially set up the business and begin to take bookings. My plan initially was to work from home so I had the flexibility to be there for my children when required and work around a young families needs. I had a workshop built in my garden where I could make up the designs and do consultations with my clients. This worked very well for the first few years, but as I got more bookings and larger scale weddings I needed more space.
What is the best thing about running your own business? The best thing about running my own business is the freedom and creativity it allows. I am also very lucky to work with a brilliant team of florists on the most beautiful weddings. I love meeting new clients and working with them to bring their wedding florals dreams to reality.
The hardest thing? The hardest thing is the unsociable hours and working very long days. We always have so much to design and create in such a short period of time.
Have you ever made any mistakes?Fortunately there haven’t been many! But the biggest thing I have learnt to is always listen to myself and go with my gut feeling.
How do you create a good work/ life balance when working for yourself? It’s hard in the wedding floral industry to have this!! I just make sure when things are quieter out of wedding season that I do as many things I love as possible and spend as much time with my family as I can.
How do you run your business around family life?Where possible I always try to take my children to school and pick them up. The time we have in the car together even though it’s quite short is so valuable. We discuss anything and everything! I love to see their little smiles on their faces when they come out of school too and know Mummy is there for them. If I’ve had a shorter working day, then I often work in the evenings writing quotes when they are in bed.
What or who inspires you?I find inspiration for my work from all over! Mainly nature and landscapes from living in beautiful North Yorkshire to all my holiday travels. Anything design related from fashion to interiors gives me inspiration too. Emotionally and mentally, family and friends inspire me to be the best I can be.
Do you have any advice for anyone out there thinking of starting up their own business?Go for it! Life’s to short not to try your hardest to live your dreams. Take your time though and make sure you have armed yourself with enough knowledge and experience. You’ll know when it’s right to launch. Listen to yourself and always go with your gut feeling and don’t be distracted by anyone’s else’s work. Be you!!
